INSPIRATION: Dorothia's childhood in Sunshine Canyon near Boulder ignited her love for nature and a lasting influence on her art. Nurtured by artistic parents, she honed her talents in fine art, graphic design, and illustration at various universities, ultimately she combined her passion for art and science at Iowa State University, where she graduated first in her class in Biological Pre-Medical Illustration. Thoughout her career as a scientific illustator and graphic designer she illustrated children's books on the side. She draws inspiration from nature, mythical creatures, and fantastical worlds. Although she is fluent in digital media, she prefers to work with traditional media to keep the human touch in her work. A portfolio of her earlier nature paintings are part of the nature collection in her store and can also be viewed at Painted Wings Studio.

 

CHILDREN'S BOOKS & AWARDS: Dorothia's illustration for Firefly Forest won the Grand Prize at the 2014 SCBWI Bologna Illustrator Gallery. That year, she received the SCBWI Portfolio Mentorship Award, with her portfolio among six selected from two hundred. Her first authored picture book, I Am Goose!2020), was recognized in the Bank Street College of Education's Books of 2021.
